In the world of relationship and leadership therapy, effective communication is the key to building stronger connections with others. As licensed professional therapists and a married couple, we understand the importance of communication in fostering healthy and fulfilling relationships. In this blog post, we will explore some strategies that can help you improve your communication skills and enhance your connections with others.

Do you ever feel like you are not being hear or misunderstood? This is a common issue we hear in our therapy offices. Active listening is key in this case because it shows mindfulness and care for your partner. "I" statements are helpful to replace the blame and own your feelings when communicating. An example of this is, "I feel unheard when I am talking" versus "you never listen to me".
Another main struggle can be difficulty expressing what your needs are and the emotions you are feeling. It helps to slow down the cycle and identify the emotions on a chart. There are many tools such as the emotions wheel that can help you dig deeper beyond frustration into feeling invisible or undervalued.
Finally, if you find that you and your partner are involved in numerous fights or misunderstandings, it helps to slow down the cycle. This helps to label the problem and not the partner which slows reactivity. When you listen and paraphrase what you hear, this helps build validation and reduce assumption.
If you feel that you need help fixing communication issues, we have a webinar that involves creating safety, teaching specific skills, and helping partners shift from reactive patterns to intentional connection. Sign up now!
